Library Board to Look at Internet Filters

Should Lubbock libraries filter content on the Internet? That's what Library Board members will address Monday.

The group plans to review the library's Internet safety policy. Currently, the library does not use any type of filtering system allowing users to look up almost anything, including pornography.

While it is legal for people over the age of 18 to view that type of material, some say it's inappropriate to do so at a public place such as the library.

Library services director Jane Clausen tells us they do get complaints about people accessing inappropriate material.

"When we do have a complaint, we will talk to that individual who is accessing something that might be deemed inappropriate, and we ask them not to do that," Clausen said.

Clausen tells us the library has never used Internet filters, but they do require people 17 and younger to have permission from a parent to use their Internet.

Lubbock City Council members have the final say on whether filters will be used.
