Some Lubbock families took advantage of great opportunities to get free school supplies this weekend.
Victory in Praise Church sponsored a school supplies and clothing give away. It was held at the corner of Zenith and Cornell at the George Woods Park.
This wasn't the only free supplies event this weekend. Free supplies were also given away to students of all ages at Saturday's Back to School Fiesta at Texas Tech. The event featured a college and community fair, seminars and bus tours of the campus.
Senator Robert Duncan was the featured speaker. He was also honored today with the first Robert L. Duncan Community Champion Award.
"(Robert Duncan) is a great champion for Texas Tech University, a great champion for the Lubbock community and for the wide ranging parts of WestT Texas," Texas Tech President Jon Whitmore said.
The award was established to honor a person in the Lubbock community who has demonstrated outstanding service to to the city and its surrounding areas, and who has further established a public commitment to higher education.
Duncan, who is a Texas Tech grad, said it was a great honor and great gift - being that Saturday was his birthday.
And if you missed these school supplies give-aways there will be another chance this Monday. The Democratic party of Lubbock will give away free supplies from 1pm-5pm. They are located at 2809 74th street, Suite A.
But remember, it's first come, first serve.
