Ever wondered if the power goes out how long will your food still be safe in the frig or freezer? The answer is, it depends. Mostly on whether you can keep the door closed.
The USDA says food will stay cold in the refrigerator for up to four hours if unopened. A full freezer will keep its temperature for two days, one day if the freezer is half full. The USDA says we should always keep a thermometer inside because when the power comes back on, you can check to make sure the temperature is cooler than forty degrees, if you've dropped to forty or warmer, it's not safe to eat and don't just smell it or look at it to judge if food is safe.
The USDA says when in doubt, throw it out.
