Right now, police are searching for a man who exposed himself to children on school grounds this morning. NewsChannel 11's Suleika Acosta has been following the story and explains what happened and how school officials are handling the incident.
Police say a white man, possibly in his late twenties ran through the school yard at Maedgen Elementary at 44th and Nashville. They say he exposed himself to several children and one teacher. We're told he then ran through this alley and disappeared.
"They walked from home and then we went to pick up the oldest one at Maedgen and she's the one that told us what happened," says Rey Suarez. He lives just four blocks from Maedgen Elementary. Every morning, Rey's thirteen year old daughter walks his other kindergarten age child to school. But Tuesday morning, when the kids reached the school, they say they saw a man expose himself. "At that point Alex told us that the police had already been notified by someone in the office. My kids are supposed to be safe at school. I can't protect them anywhere else but at school they are supposed to be safe," says Rey.
Police say just after 7 a.m., a nude man ran around the building and into an alley adjacent from the campus. "From reports we have had from parents and faculty we think there are three to four students who had the unhappy, unpleasant experience of seeing this person," explain Nancy Sharp, LISD public information officer. She says they are locking all doors except the front door and increasing officer patrol around the school. "We've increased patrols we need people to be our partners and parents and faculty being our partners to help us keep our eyes open for folks like this," she adds.
School officials sent home a letter today to alert parents of the situation and ask them to keep a watchful eye as they drop their kids off. Again, police are still searching for the suspect. He is described as a white man, late 20's to early 30's, about 5'10, slim build with short hair. Right now, he faces a charge of indecent exposure.
