I'm dedicating the next few minutes tonight, to a growing problem in Lubbock.
First, I want you to imagine a life where the number of carbs your child eats at any given meal is a matter of life and death. Imagine giving your 2-year-old 10 blood tests a day, just to stay alive. Or imagine your child wearing an insulin pump for the rest of their life. If you haven't guessed by now, I'm taking about a reality for thousands on the South Plains that suffer from diabetes.
Did you know that every 21 seconds another person is diagnosed with diabetes? And that 1 in 3 people born after the year 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime. I have 3 boys, Palmer, Parker and Pierce, that have all been born since 2000, so that statistic really hits home for me.
Today I had the honor of meeting little Emma Holmes and her mother, Amy. Emma is a beautiful and very bright 2 year old, who is also living with type-one diabetes. During their visit to NewsChannel 11, I learned Emma will wear an insulin pump - 24 hours a day - for the rest of her life. Amy will have to prick little Emma's finger 10 times a day for the rest of her life. That means their night time routine includes bath time, teeth brushing, and blood tests at midnight and 2 a.m. And Emma is not alone. There are 25,400 people in Lubbock, who are also living with the same disease...but there is hope.
The Lubbock Council of the American Diabetes Association is one of the best in the country. They dedicate 100% of their time to curing and helping improve the quality of life for people like Emma. They also work tireless hours to prevent your kids, my kids, our parents and relatives from becoming victims.
So consider this...sign up for the American Diabetes Association's 2006 Walk this Saturday at Mackenzie Park by calling the local ADA office at 794-0691. Or if you can't make it on Saturday, then donate what you can this week because people like Emma sure do need the help.
