We like to think it's rare that a doctor operates on the wrong body part. But it's hard to know how often that happens because Florida is the only state that requires wrong site surgery to be reported.
But now, using malpractice records, researchers at the University of Chicago estimate there have been as many as twenty-seven hundred cases of wrong site surgery in this country. Everything from removing the wrong lung to giving radiation to the wrong patient.
Experts say they hope this study will encourage hospitals to report of all wrong site surgeries because the best way to prevent that from happening is to learn from the mistakes of a previous case.
