Lubbock's first flu clinic was yesterday. If you missed it don't worry, you will have many opportunities to get your flu shot this season at your convenience. This year the Centers for Disease Control says the vaccine is plentiful and for the first time instead of just vaccinating kids who are high risk because of a chronic illness, it is recommending the flu shot for all children six months to five years old.
Apparently, most kids in that age group don't get flu shots and the CDC says that needs to change.
"When a child ends up in the hospital, is in an intensive care unit on a ventilator, maybe even dies, when there was a recommendation that child should've gotten a flu vaccine and didn't, it's a tragedy," said Dr. Julia McMillian of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Every year, thirty-six thousand Americans die from complications of the flu. You can get a flu shot at any private clinic or at the city health department. For more information, you can visit the following web site: http://www.cdc.gov/flu.
