Amniocentesis Safer Than Once Thought

If you're pregnant and considering Amniocentesis, this should be of some comfort. A new study finds that prenatal test appears to be much safer than previously thought.

Amniocentesis is a procedure that looks for abnormal chromosomes in the fetus that would reveal down syndrome, among other things. Women have always been told there was a one in 200 chance of miscarriage after that procedure.

But now, researchers at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine say after following more than 35,000 pregnancies, it appears to risk of miscarriage after amniocentesis is actually about 1 in 1600.
