A birth control pill for men may not be such a crazy idea now that scientists in Dallas have discovered a potential new target for making that happen.
Researchers at the UT Southwestern Medical Center say they've found when male mice are missing a certain protein, they are infertile. So, now, they're trying to figure out a way to turn off that protein in humans to see if it would make men sterile too.
Researchers say they still have a lot to learn about the protein. But that this opens the door to new possibilities in birth control. The protein is called GBA2.
The sperm in male mice without this protein had abnormally large, round heads, and were fewer in number and moved more slowly than normal mouse sperm.
