Our new Arena Football 2 team has a name, the Lubbock Renegades, a name that's has been used the last 4 years by a local semi-pro team.
"Rick and I were a little bit skeptical at first because there had been some football teams here before. But as we delved into it and found out what was going on, we got really excited. We found out a little bit about the AF2 and we got pretty excited about what was going on. We are really excited to announce an AF2 franchise team coming here to Lubbock," said Bart Reagor, local owner of the Lubbock Renegades, along with Rick Dykes.
As NewsChannel 11 first told you Monday, former Red Raider Rodney Blackshear was officially named the Renegades coach Wednesday. Blackshear was a Tech wide receiver from 1987 through 1991. He held the single game reception record of 251 yards against Houston in 1991 until Joel Filani broke it last year. Blackshear played the arena game for several years and he's excited to be Lubbock's coach.
"It's great to be back in Lubbock. We're bringing a heck of a product which is indoor football...arena football. I played it for 8 years, been involved with it and love it. It's a great thing for the fans as well as the players because it's an opportunity to continue playing after your college career and maybe get a chance to play in the NFL," said Blackshear.
The Renegades begin play in March of 2007.
