When you see your parents and grandparents this holiday ask them, have you gotten your flu shot? That is so important among seniors and anyone else who lives or works around senior citizens.
A new study finds outbreaks of the flu in nursing homes, for example, could be significantly reduced if residents, and especially the caretakers, get flu shots. The study by the Rand Corporation found that nursing homes were 60 percent less likely to have flu outbreaks if just more than half the staff would get their flu shots.
Remember seniors are high risk anyway for flu complications. According to the CDC, the flu is blamed every year for 20,000 deaths and more than 100,000 hospitalizations, mostly among the elderly.
