Who would have thought a portion of the abortion pill could someday be used to prevent breast cancer? that pill, RU-486, is intended to end pregnancy in the first trimester.
But now, researchers have found a compound in that drug can also block the hormones that spark cancer in women who have the breast cancer gene. 50% of women who carry the breast cancer gene go on to develop breast or ovarian cancer by age seventy.
The compound in the abortion pill, called Mifepristone, researchers say in the Journal Science, they hope these findings will give women who have the gene more options to prevent the disease.
The study comes from the University of California at Irvine.
