Christmas goodies from this Albertson's bakery at 6524 Slide Road are sure to be a hit - they were with the health inspectors. They had zero critical violations.

Ooh la la, this place is "tres bon" - meaning Frenchman's Inn at 4409 19th Street was perfection.

Here's something to hoot and holler about. Hoot's at 3901 Clovis Hwy. wraps up this week's top performers.

Here is a complete list of the restaurants and their violations for the week ending on 12/14/06.

Now to our low performers.

Whataburger at 8226 University had four critical violations.

  • An employee did not wash their hands between job duties.
  • An employee did not properly handle ready to eat foods.
  • There was potential for cross-contamination when an employee handled raw meat, then touched a cooler door, utensils and ready to eat food.

Management says all violations were corrected during the inspection. The report shows that as well.

Rudy's BBQ at Slide and S. Loop 289 had five critical violations.

  • Potato salad was found at 45 degrees and sour cream was discarded after it was found at 53 degrees. Cold food must be 41 degrees or colder.
  • Beans and brisket did not have proper date marking.
  • A cooler did not have a thermometer.
  • A can opener was soiled.
  • No Heimlich poster was displayed.

Management at Rudy's had no comment. The report shows one violation was corrected during the inspection.

Taqueria Las Chivas at 1925 19th Street had six critical violations.

  • Diced tomatoes were 53 degrees, eggs were 48 degrees and ground meat was 47 degrees. The temperature of the walk-in cooler was holding at 43 degrees. It must be 41 degrees or colder.
  • A personal drink without a lid was found on a food contact surface.
  • A cook did not wash hands between duties.
  • Ground beef, meet, chicken and ham slices were found without an expiration date.
  • The correct type of thermometer was not available.
  • Utensils and utensil bins were soiled.

Management says all violations have been corrected. The report shows all but one were corrected during the inspection.

Tech Cafe at 3606 Slide Road also had six critical violations.

  • Food was not properly cooled.
  • Raw beef patties were 40 degrees. They must be 41 degrees or colder.
  • A cook did not wash hands after handling raw meat and pickles and lettuce.
  • An employee wiped a sandwich board with the same cloth used to wipe a contaminated surface.
  • Expired eggs were found.
  • There was no thermometer in a refrigerator nor was there a thermometer to check food temperatures.

The owner says, "We have a lot of new hires and are in the process of reorganizing." He adds that, "All violations have been corrected." The report shows all but one were corrected during the inspection. 

Villa Pizza at 6002 Slide Road had seven critical violations.

  • Cheese was found at 54 degrees. Cold food must be 41 degrees or colder.
  • A towel was left in a hand sink.
  • An insect was spotted during the inspection.
  • A toxic item was not clearly labeled.
  • A toilet was leaking.
  • A refrigerator did not have a thermometer.
  • A container of bacon was stored on top, in direct contact with, Canadian bacon. Pizza sauce was not covered. Lids and a scoop were soiled.

Management says all violations have been corrected. The report show all but one were corrected at the time of the inspection.

Rosita's Cafe at 3501 Ave. A also had seven critical violations.

  • Raw bacon on a counter was 62 degrees. It must be 41 degrees or colder.
  • Employees did not adequately wash their hands before handling food when grilling or on the food prep table.
  • Nor did employees wash their hands before handling tortillas.
  • Raw pork was found in a hand sink.
  • The inspector observed a sewer leak outside behind the building.
  • The prep-cooler did not have a thermometer.
  • Microwaves and shelves above grills were soiled. And plates used to serve food were chipped.

Management says, "We are under new ownership, but are running smoothly now and await our next inspection." She says all violations have been corrected. The report shows most were corrected at the time of the inspection.

Souper Salad at 6703 Slide Road is now a five-time repeat low performer with seven critical violations.

  • Soup was not properly cooled.
  • Diced eggs were 47 degrees. Tuna salad was 48 degrees. It must be 41 degrees or colder.
  • Pasta was 90 degrees - 45 degrees below the safe temperature of 135 degrees.
  • An uncovered, personal drink was found on a food contact surface.
  • A dented can was found.
  • A spray bottle was not properly labeled. Cleaning solutions were stored above a prep counter.
  • Soiled plates were stored by the salad bar - to be used by the public. Scissors and a peeler were found soiled.

Management says all violations were corrected when the inspector was present. The report shows that as well.
