Misleading Diet Pill Claims

You may be buying into a weight loss program that the Federal Trade Commission has just ordered to pay millions of dollars in civil penalties for making false claims.

The settlement comes after studies proved their claims were not worth their weight in salt. Here are the four weight loss plans fined by the FTC Xenadrine, EFX Cortislim, One-A-Day Weight Smart, and Trim Spa. Together they will pay $25 million for misleading the public about weight loss along with unrealistic health claims like it reduces the risk of cancer.

The FTC wants you to know these products will stay on store shelves they just can't be marketed the same way anymore. So, gone are promises of a quick-fix and you won't see celebrity endorsements.

"Testimonials from individuals are not a substitute for science and that is what Americans need to understand," said Deborah Platt Majoras, the FTC commissioner.

The FTC says the money collected as part of the settlement will be used to reimburse customers who bought the products based on those claims.
