Hypothermia in the Elderly

As many parts of the country are hit with bitterly cold weather, a new study shows why it's especially important to watch out for hypothermia in the elderly.

Penn State researchers compared the physiology of young adults to the elderly when exposed to cold temperatures and they found the elderly become more susceptible to the cold because changes in body composition like body fat influence how the body deals with the cold.

The report says nearly half of all elderly people who suffer hypothermia will not survive.
