Many studies have decided that heavy drinking while pregnant has been linked to several types of birth defects, but a new study finds that even small amounts of alcohol early in pregnancy can lead to trouble for that child.
Researchers analyzed data from thousands of women who filled out a survey of their drinking habits while pregnant. Then, they measured the mental health in over 9,000 children from all those moms. They found drinking less than one alcoholic beverage a week during the first three months of pregnancy was still linked to significant development delays.
More studies are underway.
