Eight Not So Great, NIU 8, Tech 5

Northern Illinois plated three runs with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to post an 8-5 win over Texas Tech on Saturday evening and put an end to the Red Raiders seven-game win streak.

The loss drops Texas Tech to 8-4 on the season while Northern Illinois (1-1) picked up its first win of the season.

The Red Raiders had plenty of chances throughout the game but could never breakthrough as Tech stranded 15 base runners, including two in the bottom of the ninth. Tech left the bases loaded in the third, fifth and seventh innings.

After reliever Paul Gonzalez gave up a pair of hits to start the top of the ninth, Collin Auten came in and recorded consecutive outs, including a play at the plate. Northern Illinois third baseman Jesse Seykora came through in the clutch as laced a two-RBI double down the left field line for what turned out to be the winning runs. Jordin Hood followed Seykora's lead and gave the Huskies a three-run cushion with an RBI double to right.

After falling behind 5-2 in the top of the fifth inning, the Red Raiders started the comeback with a solo run in the bottom half of the fifth to pull within two. In the bottom of the seventh, the Red Raiders tied the game with a pair of runs off a Huskie defensive error and an RBI single by freshman Taylor Ashby.

Paul Gonzalez (0-1) was charged with the loss for Tech after giving up a pair of hits in the top of the ninth. Matt German (1-0) earned the win in relief for Northern Illinois as he pitched two shutout innings and gave up just one hit.

Texas Tech will try and clinch this three-game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for noon.
