The Lubbock Cotton Kings extended their win streak to a season-high three games as they collected four goals in the first period leading to a 5-2 win over the Rocky Mountain Rage Tuesday night. Eight different Cotton Kings recorded points in the team's 20th win of the year. Lubbock has a record of 20-25-6 with 46 points in the standings.
Anders Strome got his Lubbock team the early 1-0 lead just 19 seconds into the game for his 100th professional goal of his career. Cotton Kings Philippe Lacasse increased the lead to two with a goal at 5:48 of the first period. Rocky Mountain got on the board with a Nathan Rosychuk tally 1:30 later at 7:18 of the first period. Lubbock's Simon Watson got the 3-1 lead for his team as he got the puck past Rage goaltender Trevor Cunning. The power play score ended Cunning's night as he was replaced by David Guerrera 7:52 into the contest. The Cotton Kings were able to collect their first three goals of the game off of their first five shots on net. Lubbock lit the lamp for the fourth time in the period with a Jimmy Callahan score with 2:25 remaining in the opening frame. With their fourth goal, Lubbock recorded their third game of the season in which they scored four goals in a period. It is the first time they have done so since November 25.
In the second period former Cotton King and current Rage forward Matic Kralj cut the lead to two as he fired the puck past Lubbock netminder J.F. Perras. The Rage were unable to score again as Lubbock's Kyle Nosan finished the contest earning an empty-netter with 14 seconds remaining in regulation.
Perras takes the win in net as he made 26 saves off of 28 shots on goal in 60:00 of ice time. His win streak goes to three games and his record for the year is 14-13-2. Rocky Mountain's Cunning suffers the loss in net in 7:52 of action with two stops off of five shots on goal. Guerrera had 51:48 of ice time with 25 saves off of 26 shots on net. For the first time in February the Cotton Kings out-shoot their opponents 32-28. Lubbock was 1-for-7 on the power play, while Rocky Mountain was 0-for-4 on the man-advantage.
The Cotton Kings will continue their road trip with another game at Rocky Mountain on Wednesday with an 8:05 p.m. CST face-off.
