Let's Lose It Lubbock: Week 7

It's Weight Watchers week 7 and by now you know we weigh in and learn about making wise choices. We've had Subway sandwiches, McDonald's salads, and low-fat desserts, but you'll never guess what was on the menu this time!

Hot tamales! But not just any hot tamales, a Lubbock favorite that's getting national attention. Pedro's Tamales was featured in Southern Living Magazine as their favorite Tex-Mex pick. So if any of you have not tried them, this is an excellent opportunity.

So, how could Pedro's Tamales be a wise choice? The Weight Watcher formula calculates calories, fat grams and dietary fiber to come up with a number of points. Based on your weight most people can eat between 20 and 30 points a day. Pedro's turns out to be 6 points for four of the beef tamales or you can eat four chicken tamales for just 5 points.

"But, now, not everybody's tamales are the same number of points," said Teena Beedles, our Weight Watchers leader.

Aside from the burrito, hot sauce is another good choice. You see, our assignment was to share a food find like Pedro's, something surprising you can eat without feeling guilty. Debbie found Freshly Yogurt Cream Oatmeal Cookies for two points. And Diane suggested English Toffee Crunch Bars.

"They're only two points. They're not big but they're wonderful," said Teena.

But it was Teena who got the crowd drooling with Hostess cupcakes, those are one point for a package. So, how did our group do this time. We lost 18 pounds this week, that means in all we've lost 168 pounds.

Ms. Hankins, Principal at Wester, has lost ten point two pounds. "I was just careful and thought about it," said Ms. Hankins.

Nancy Sharp from LISD has lost five pounds. "I divided it in half and I ate half," said Nancy.

The take home message for all of us trying to be losers, make wise choices and if you cheat a little you don't have to eat it all.
