Smoking During Pregnancy

Bad news for women who smoke during pregnancy.

A study from the Netherlands found a higher rate of blood vessel damage including thicker walls of the arteries in young adults whose mothers smoked while pregnant compared to children whose mothers did not smoke during pregnancy.

"It suggests the damage of smoking during pregnancy is not just the immediate pregnancy related outcome, but it goes even beyond that, it actually goes to problems with the blood vessels in adulthood," said Dr. Michael Lauer, a cardiologist.

This research was presented to the American Heart Association at its National Conference.
