Cancer Drug Warning

The FDA has issued stern new warnings for drugs sold under the brand names Epogen, Procrit and Aranesp, all of which are used to treat Anemia in patients with cancer and kidney disease.

However, federal health officials say now that new studies show when the dose is bumped to higher than recommended the risk is also climbing for blood clots, heart attacks and even death in kidney patients and the drugs are even blamed for an increase in tumor size in patients with head and neck cancers.

The three drugs lumped into a group known as ESA's are genetically engineered versions of a natural protein that increases the number of red blood cells. But now, the FDA is asking for new stronger labels encouraging doctors and patients to weigh the risks and benefits before prescribing these to patients.
