LISD's "LAMP" Mentoring Program Brightens Lives

Doctor Kearse is one of 100 mentors in the Lubbock Independent School District's mentoring program called "LAMP". Doctor Kearse says, "I get great satisfaction...not that I know that it'll ever make any difference in the lives of those I mentor, but it might possibly and if you don't get started, you'll never make a difference in anybody's life." But, Michael Boggio, a student whom Kearse mentors, says Doctor Kearse has made a difference...more than he knows. Michael says, "He helps me bring my grades up and helps me want to come to school. He pushes me to where I want to read and do my chores." And, Michael has a message to others who want to help out, but aren't quite sure whether they can make a difference in a child's life- "kids always need extra help by staying out of drugs and alcohol..mentors help them do that."
