The US government can force the recall of many products but not food. Now, after recent scares with contaminated spinach, peanut butter, and even pet food, some people who ended up sick from those products came to Capitol Hill Wednesday to say that has got to change.
"It seems we recall toys and tires and everything else in this country," said Representative Bart Stupak of Michigan.
"One thing I found out, I can't protect them from spinach. Only you guys can," said Michael Armstrong, a parent of two daughters who got ill from Spinach.
Another problem, the FDA's safety guidelines for food manufacturers are just suggestions not mandatory. No solution yet on this. In fact, the FDA's chief of safety and security says it will take years to develop new regulations for the industry so, voluntary guidelines, for now, are the best we have.
