Soup Before Dinner

Starting off a meal with a bowl of soup may be a good way to help cut calories.

A new study at Penn State shows people who ate soup as a first course at lunch reduced their total caloric intake by 20 percent compared with those who went right in to the main course.

Experts say the type of soup is key and recommend low-calorie, broth-based soups, rather than creamy soups.
