The FDA announced Tuesday it is going to create a new position to make sure the nation's food supply is safe.
This comes after a growing number of food illnesses among people and their pets. Not to mention a hailstorm of criticism from consumer groups that say the FDA needs more money and manpower to keep watch over what Americans eat.
"FDA does not have what it needs to inspect food here in the us let alone imported food that is increasing every year," said Patty Lovera, with Food and Water Watch.
"But the bottom line for consumers is to demand food they buy is marked....right down to farm," said Caroline Smith DeWaal, with the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
Consumer groups also say it's up to Americans to wash all produce carefully and educate themselves about food safety in the home.
