Hair relaxers commonly used by African American women are not linked to breast cancer according to new research.
Hair relaxers are not fully regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and could legally contain ingredients not listed on the label. Many studies have shown a higher prevalence of breast cancer among black women than white women. Researchers wondered if the two were linked.
But after following nearly 50,000 women for six years researchers found no evidence that hair relaxers lead to breast cancer even after taking into account the type of relaxer, or how often a woman used them.
