LHS Graduate Both Athlete And Dancer

As graduation kicks off, Lubbock High School seniors received their diplomas at the United Spirit Arena Friday night.

About 50% of the class graduated with honors as 443 Westerners turned their tassels. One of the seniors who walked with honors is Bashaun Williams, who's both an athlete and a dancer.

Bashaun is not your typical jock. Excelling at basketball the Westerner has got moves not only on the court but also the stage. So much so, his ballet shoes are taking him all the way to the University of Utah.

Graduation is a culmination of years of study. However for Bashaun, his high school days were filled with school work, basketball and ballet practice.

"At the beginning of the year I was mainly focused on basketball. I didn't think I'd do ballet in college," says Bashaun Williams.

But Bashaun earned a scholarship to the University of Utah. Dancing for over 7 years, this honor student has been in a number of Ballet Lubbock performances, including The Nutcracker and A Mid- Summer Nights Dream. While all along still hoop'n it up on the court.

"We though ballet was a good thing for him. And it did help, he was quick in agility, he could jump great and was one of the best athletes in the district," says Assistant LHS Men's Basketball Coach Jesus Arenas.

"He had to be at ballet practice at the same time we were having practice and we just had to manage without him. It was all fun and interesting at the same time," says teammate, AJ Washington.

The point guard played varsity ball for 3 years. And Williams says, ballet helped him both on and off the court.

"Ballet is the basis of any sport because you have to do the flexibility thing, the stamina and strength. Ballet is hard," says Williams.

So is hanging up the jersey. Williams says he loves basketball and plans to play intramural, but his eyes are now set on bigger stages.

"I plan after my senior year in college to join a company somewhere, it doesn't matter where, and just dance until I can't anymore," adds Williams.

Williams says between a number of different scholarships, he received almost a full ride for ballet to the University of Utah.
