Victim Knew Suspect In Fatal Club Accident

Friends of the victim in this weekend's fatal hit-and-run at a Lubbock nightclub tell NewsChannel 11 she knew the man who hit her.  Darene Brooks, 19, remains behind bars, charged with failure to stop and render aid, but police tell us those charges could be upgraded.

Brooks allegedly hit-and-killed 19-year-old Joniquia Washington, and sent 21-year-old Erin Mika Wright to the hospital early Sunday morning.  Wright has been upgraded to satisfactory condition.

Washington went to the Lizard Club with one of her closest friends, Kyshunna Howard. That's where Howard says they danced with the suspect, Brooks, just minutes before the accident that took her friends life.

A night of fun turned frantic in only a few seconds.  Several callers dialed 911 saying: "We need an ambulance."  "Someone's killed a person at Club Lizard."  "I think she's dead.

"As a crowd left the club on 34th Street, they saw a car run over Wright.  According to investigators, Wright became stuck underneath the car.  That's when Washington tried to help, but then she was also hit.

"They were trying to leave, and they ran over this girl," one 911 caller said.

Kyshunna Howard saw it all.

"She was like Kyshunna, let's go outside, and I was like, okay," Howard said.

She told NewsChannel 11 that she tried to warn her friend, but it was too late.

"I pulled her.  He just ran over her," Howard said.

"Did he see you guys," NewsChannel 11 asked.

"No," Howard said.

Howard says she and Joniquia went to school with the suspect, Brooks. They'd even danced together that night.

"We danced with the boy. We had fun at the club with him," Howard said.

Police arrested Brooks just blocks away from the club in the 1800 block of Manhattan Drive.

"He was a friend," Howard said.

"What do you think he's going through right now," NewsChannel 11 asked.

"Like killing himself," Howard said.

"What would you say to Brooks," NewsChannel 11 asked.

"I guess to hold on," Howard said.

Washington leaves behind a six week old baby.  Her family is still finalizing funeral arrangements.
