An 8-week-old Dachshund puppy is dead after allegedly being beaten by its owner's boyfriend. But as of Tuesday evening, no animal cruelty charges have been filed.
It all started this Tuesday morning around 3:45 at the Savannah Oaks Apartments on the 5200 block of 50th Street, when a neighbor reported hearing three loud thuds and a scream like he had never heard before.
"I was woken up by a scream that didn't sound human and I figured out that it was the little dog, a little Dachshund," Randy Ransom said.
The small dog is commonly known as a Weiner dog. Ransom lives in the apartment next door and heard the entire incident happen before calling police.
"By the time I got out of bed to address the situation he had slammed her against the wall of the apartment three times," Ransom said.
Ransom beat on his own wall, trying to stop what was happening. Sources tell NewsChannel 11 the dog suffered severe blunt force trauma to the body and was bleeding from the ears, mouth and nose.
"The police officer did tell me that the dog was dead and that there was a lot of blood in the apartment and that he was on the run," said Ransom.
Police later arrested a 22-year-old man and charged him with public intoxication and evading arrest. Animal cruelty charges have not been filed as the case is still under investigation. Once complete, it will be sent to the District Attorney's Office for review.
Ransom added, "She was a little 8-week-old puppy. Very cute little Dachshund. It's a shame."
Because this is still an active investigation we won't release the suspects name but the two charges of evading arrest and public intoxication are both misdemeanors. An animal cruelty charge if filed is also a misdemeanor.
