Urine Signs

We all need healthy kidneys to filter out waste and excess fluid, but leave the good stuff for our bodies to use. How do we know if our kidneys are working the way they should? Well, next time you're in the bathroom, take a closer look. "For the person who's paying attention, many of the clues can be obtained from looking at the urine itself. Under ordinary circumstances, the urine is a light yellow in color," says Dr. Andrew Dancha, Nephrologist.

Dr. Dancha says healthy urine can vary from light yellow to dark amber. Disease, infection, dyes, medication, even certain foods can change the color. You need to see a doctor if a color change is persistent.

Also, Dr. Dancha says watch for excess foam because patients with diabetes may have foamy urine, an indication the body is losing too much protein through the urine. Remember, the best thing you can do to take care of your kidneys is drink lots of water.
