Lubbock Police cruisers could soon get a major upgrade that could improve the safety of both officers and the public.
The City of Lubbock and Lubbock County are applying for a $247,000 JAG federal grant. Some of that money would be used to install Global Positioning Systems in police cruisers.
"If an officer is in need of immediate assistance, dispatch can look on the map and see exactly where that officer is and send someone as needed in a rapid response," said Lt. John Caspell, Lubbock Police Department.
The police department says the upgrades could take up to a year to implement.
