Lubbock City officials announced a second effort to oust Lubbock City Councilwoman Linda DeLeon from office has failed. The first time the petition failed by 22 signatures, but this time the recount was different. It failed by 39 signatures.
City Secretary Becky Garza says they found more names this time around that should have been invalidated.
"We invalidated several for incorrect date-of-birth. The majority were no record. We just couldn't find them in the system at all. We looked at the name, couldn't find them in the system," Garza said.
Petition organizers found out this afternoon that their second attempt had failed. Armando Gonzales say he's not sure what to think of the process since the number of rejected names increased by 17.
"Our next thing to do is, we're going to acquire an independent person to review the work, an expert to review the work and then according to that finding consider going to court," petition organizer Armando Gonzales said.
Garza says the petitioners have the option of starting to collect names again. We'll continue to follow this developing story.
