Perry Signs Science Education Bill

Governor Rick Perry signed a bill Tuesday, to create a weeklong summer program for students interested in math, science and engineering. The bill targets middle and high school students.

Perry signed the bill at the El Paso campus of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

The summer program allocates about two million dollars for colleges and universities around the state. It also establishes a scholarship program for would-be engineering students.

The governor says the summer program and scholarship will be vital in helping Texas continue to train scientists, mathematicians and engineers students.

Perry also touted legislative efforts to give the El Paso complex about 48 million dollars to allow the campus to morph into a complete four-year medical school.
