Juneteenth Celebrations Kick Off

Juneteenth celebrates the heritage of black Americans, and in case you didn't know, it is observed on June 19th. Tonya Johnson, the president of the Lubbock Juneteenth Celebration Committee, says it's important to come out and be active in the celebrations this year.

Twenty-eight years ago, June 19th was approved as a state holiday. Celebrations began in Lubbock on Tuesday with a banquet and continue through the 19th. Thursday will be the Mister and Miss Juneteenth Scholarship Pageant and Saturday there will be a parade. So there are plenty of events going on throughout the week for everyone in the Lubbock community to take part in.
