He was convicted and sentenced to die in 2000, and seven years later, that day is finally here. Gilberto Reyes was condemned for the 1998 murder of his 19-year-old ex-girlfriend. He will be executed Thursday at 6pm.
He kidnapped Yvette Barraz from the restaurant where she worked. Reyes then took her to a remote area where he beat her over the head with a hammer, strangled her, and raped her twice as she was dying. Her body was found two days later, stuffed in the back seat of her car near the Texas/Mexico border.
Reyes fled to Mexico and was arrested three months later. Witnesses said the couple had a rocky relationship. During the trial, witnesses testified that at the age of 26, Reyes stalked and threatened Barraz weeks before her death. In fact, just one month before the murder, Reyes was arrested and charged with aggravated assault for chasing Barraz and then firing a gun at her.
