A Muleshoe man has been executed for killing his ex-girlfriend 19-year-old Yvette Barraz in 1998. Gilberto Reyes died by lethal injection shortly after 6 pm in Huntsville.
Reyes stalked Barraz after they broke up. He kidnapped her from the Leal's Mexican food restaurant where she was a waitress. Her body was found a day later in Presido. She had been hit in the head with a claw hammer and strangled. Investigators say she was sexually assaulted after death.
Police arrested Reyes about two and a half months later in Portales, New Mexico. Police say Reyes had the keys to Barraz's car and home when he was arrested.
Reyes final statement was, "I love ya'll and I'm going to miss ya'll." He had no witnesses on his side of the death chamber in Huntsville. He never looked at the parents or other relatives of his victim.
