Lubbock County Commissioners will send a formal request to the Texas Department of Transportation and Safety asking that an overpass be built at Highway 87 and Woodrow Road.
Commissioner Bill McCay says the county wants to do anything it can to improve driver safety. The final call will be up to TxDOT, which would foot the bill.
There have been numerous accidents at or near the intersection. McCay said in January of 2005 that he is especially trying to tackle Woodrow Road and make it a safer route to Lubbock Cooper High School.
You may remember back in August of 2004, 17-year-old Andrea Rodriguez died following a five car pile up. According to DPS, four cars on Woodrow Road had slowed down to let a bus turn onto another county road. That's when a fifth car hit the end of the line of vehicles causing a chain reaction crash. Rodriguez was a student at Lubbock Cooper.
And back in July of 2005 another fatal traffic accident occurred at the intersection of 87 and Woodrow. DPS troopers say Oscar Beltran pulled out in front of a Ford Explorer. His two passengers, 26-year-old Isabell Segura and 3-month-old Margarita Dominguez died in the crash.
Again, the final call for the overpass will be up to TxDOT. We'll continue to follow this story and bring you the latest.
