There is something in abundance on here on the South Plains proving beneficial for Texas Tech University, and that's wind.
Texas Tech will soon contribute to multi-million dollar project for wind research. The Department of Energy announced it will invest four million dollars toward wind turbine blade testing facilities. One facility will be located in Massachusetts. The other, called the Lone Star Wind Alliance, will be in Texas. Texas Tech will be one of the universities contributing to this alliance.
"Wind energy is one of the most important components of renewable energy sources that will help us reduce our dependency on imported oil and gas from overseas," said Texas Senator John Cornyn, "and it also is clean energy and good for the environment."
These facilities are expected to be operational by 2009.
