Food for Thought Report 6.28

Whether it's a "Grand Slam Slugger" or "Moons Over My Hammy" this all-night diner is serving up a sizzling-plate of perfection. Denny's at 4718 Slide Road is a top performer.

Along with "America's Favorite Drive-in." Sonic at 8010 University whips up a perfect health inspection.

And rounding-out our top performers, like a hand-tossed pizza, is this college hot-spot. One Guy From Italy at 1101 University is fantastico.

Here is a complete list of the restaurants and their violations for the week ending on 6/28/07.

Now to our low performers.

Anna Olivarez has owned Anna's Mexican Restaurant in Olton for ten years, and to celebrate that anniversary she opened the new Lubbock location at 6909 Indiana.

  • Cooked peppers were on a counter cooling.
  • Shredded cheese was not 41 degrees or below.
  • An employee was handling cheese with their bare hands.
  • An employee did not wash their hands before putting on gloves.
  • A wiping cloth was in a hand sink.

Anna even keeps a health inspection on the kitchen wall to remind employees that food safety comes first.

Our next low performer closed it's doors for good after its last health inspection. The Potato Factory at 2912 4th Street had six critical violations including: two refrigerators were holding above 60 degrees.

The report states that it is not adequate equipment to maintain product temperature. Health inspectors said the restaurant must remain closed until cold units can hold at 41 degrees or below and must get hot water heater repaired. We contacted the owner who tells us, business has been slow and they cannot afford all the repairs so they will not be reopening.

Tech Café at 2611 E. Slaton Road had seven critical violations.

  • Several cold foods were above the safe temperature of 41 degrees or colder.
  • A bowl was in a hand sink. Personal drinks were on a food prep table.
  • There were no paper towels at a hand wash sink.
  • A water and bleach solution was too strong.
  • There was no tip sensor thermometer for thin foods.
  • Food contact surfaces were soiled.
  • There was no disclosure for the consumption of under-cooked foods.

Management was not available for comment. The report shows all violations were corrected while the inspector was there.

And our final low performer is Fuddrucker's at 5501 Slide Road with 11 critical violations.

  • Cold foods were not held at their correct temperatures.
  • Hot foods were not held at their correct temperatures.
  • An employee did not wash their hands before putting on gloves.
  • Uncovered personal drinks were on an ice machine, and metal rings for shaping hamburger patties were in a hand sink.
  • A hand wash station did not have towels.
  • Cans were dented.
  • Several food items were not properly date marked.
  • A hand sink was not properly draining.
  • Toxic items were not properly labeled.
  • The facility did not have a tip censored thermometer.
  • Several food contact surfaces were soiled.

Management says all violations have been corrected. They add that they have recently lost a few of their managers, but they are now on the ball. The report states most of the violations were corrected at the time of the inspection.
