Suspended Texas shortstop Omar Quintanilla could soon take the field. The infielder from El Paso has been suspended since the season started for playing in a Mexican baseball league last fall. Quintanilla also accepted plane tickets from one of the Mexican assistant coaches. UT announced that Quintanilla will be reinstated once he pays restitution and sits out 21 games.
Quintanilla was declared ineligible February 6th after the school learned that he had played four games for a team in Caseta, Mexico, and took part in that team's postseason banquet. The NCAA says Quintanilla must pay nearly $1,400 restitution to the charity of his choice for the total amount of the benefits released.
The 21 games he must sit out represent the four games he played with the Mexican team and another 17 set by the NCAA. Quintanilla is expected to return to the lineup for the March 10th game at Texas Tech.
