Ford Gives Buyers A Gentle Reminder

The government likes the so-called gentle reminder Ford is giving its buyers, and the National Highway Transportation Safety Board is hoping other auto makers will follow suit. The requirement now is that all vehicles sold in the U.S. have a buzzer and a dashboard light reminding drivers to buckle up, but drivers who aren't buckled up in a 2002 Ford will be subjected to five minutes of intermittent beeping and flashing.

An insurance industry study found badgering drivers into buckling up would encourage 5% more drivers to wear their seat belts. Sounds like a small increase, but the insurance study says that would prevent more than 1,000 deaths and 20,000 injuries every year.
