2.6 million kids from all 50 states and 75 other countries play Little League baseball and for the first time ever, a Lubbock team of 11 and 12-year-olds had a chance to reach the Little League World Series.
Lubbock Western faced Roswell, New Mexico Friday night in the Southwest Regional Final in Waco. Lubbock Western has been hot all season and with a national television audience watching, our 11 and 12-year-olds impressively handled the pressure.
Early on Lubbock ace pitcher Garrett Williams was bringing the heat throwing almost 80 miles an hour and striking out 6 Roswell batters in the first 2 innings. But his counterpart, Austin Radar who threw a no-hitter in his last outing also had 6 k's through the 2nd.
In the third inning, Lubbock Western finally breaks through, pitcher Garrett Williams with the double to left center while Gregory Hewitt comes around from third and speedy Stephen Smith comes from first to make it 2-0 Lubbock Western.
Next batter Bryndan Arrendono does a little yard work with a two run homer into the right center stands and Lubbock breaks it open up 4-0.
Bottom of the 4th, Stephen Smith runs out the 2 out infield single allowing Bo Ricks to come home to make it 5-0. But on an errant throw with the ball still live, Brock Lilley motors home and Lubbock Western goes up 6-0.
Meanwhile, Garrett Williams kept mowing them down. He gets the final out and his 15th strikeout of the game to cap off his 1 hitter and Lubbock Western wins it 6-0.
Let the celebration begin as the dream is realized as the All-Stars become one of 8 U.S. teams heading to Williamsport, Pennsylvania for the Little League World Series.
The team will not return to Lubbock and will actually head right to Pennsylvania as the World Series starts on Friday, August 17th.
NewsChannel 11 Sports will have full coverage of the event next week.
