Tech Hockey Team Seeks Lease Agreement at City Bank Coliseum

The Tech hockey team is seeking a one-year lease agreement with the city to play in City Bank Coliseum.

The City Council is considering the proposal during a special meeting at 7:30 a.m. Thursday.

The proposed lease includes $40,000 in coliseum rental charges for 17 games and 83 team practices. The Tech hockey organization is purchasing a new ice plant and paying utilities associated with its operation. Civic Lubbock Inc. is operating concessions during all games. The lease carries an option to renew for two seasons.

Tech's program, which was established in 1999, currently competes in the American Collegiate Hockey Association against teams from other Big 12 Conference schools and from throughout the Southwest region.

Training camp is set to open September 11 at the coliseum. The team's first home game is September 28 against the University of North Texas.

Crews are on the scene of a fire at 24th Street and Avenue U.  Scanner traffic indicates this is possibly a vacant, single-story home. We're also hearing emergency crews received several calls from people nearby who are worried the fire could spread to their homes. There is heavy damage to the outside of the building. The Fire Marshal has been called to the scene.  KCBD has a crew on the scene and we will continue to update this story as we receive more information. ...
