Using MRI Scans To Test For Multiple Sclerosis

Doctors may soon be able to use MRI scans to determine whether patients are at risk for a severe form of Multiple Sclerosis.

At Brigham and Women's Hospital, they have been able to identify bright areas on the scan that reveal lesions linked to MS. And likewise, they have found that patients with the most lesions were more likely to develop a more severe case of the disease.

It is estimated that MS affects about 400,000 people in the US. Scientists are hopeful that by identifying who is most at risk, early treatment to prevent the symptoms can at least give patients more time between flare-ups.
