Fatal Wreck Near Abernathy - KCBD NewsChannel 11 Lubbock

A Plainview man is dead following an accident near Abernathy, around 11:45 p.m. Monday night.

DPS troopers say 24 year-old Olga Mejia, of Amarillo was driving a Chevy Blazer when she tried to pass an 18 wheeler on I-27, just south of Abernathy. She clipped the left front of the semi and lost control of the Blazer, causing it to roll down the median.

Her passenger, 21 year-old Manuel Vasquez, was thrown from the SUV. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Mejia was flown to UMC with moderate injuries, and is now listed in satisfactory condition.

DPS investigators say alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.
