Lubbock Health Department Investigates Mysterious Death

The Lubbock Health Department is beginning an investigation into a mysterious death. The 22-year old Lubbock man died at University Medical Center on Monday.

The victim's family tells NewsChannel 11 that the man came down with a severe earache after wakeboarding at Lake LBJ near Austin. Doctors say it may have been a parasitic or bacterial infection, but test results are still pending.

NewsChannel 11 has learned that a twelve year old Austin boy died from meningitis last month. He came down with an infection after swimming at the same lake. While it is too early to tell if the two cases are related, we do know that the form of meningitis that the boy died from is extremely rare. Since 1972, there have been only 34 cases in Texas, all of them fatal.

Again, the Lubbock man's cause of death is still unknown at this point. NewsChannel 11 is withholding his name, until those test results are known.

Stay with NewsChannel 11 for updates, as new information becomes available.
