Suspected Rapist Commits Suicide In Jail

A man suspected of raping women in both Lubbock and Midland is dead, but the investigation is not over.

Just before noon Friday, the Midland County Sheriff's office found 47-year-old Jose Luis Lopez hanging in his cell

Thursday night, Midland Swat officers arrested Lopez, after finding him locked in a hotel bathroom.

At this time, Midland authorities are investigating this apparent suicide. The Midland County Sheriff's Office says Jose Luis Lopez was found in the shower of his cell hanging by a piece of blanket.

Lopez was being held at the Midland Central Detention Center on a $500,000 dollar bond for an aggravated sexual assault charge out of Lubbock. The Midland County Sheriff's office says medical help was unsuccessful, and Lopez was pronounced dead just before 12:30 Friday afternoon.

The 47-year-old is suspected of raping two women in Lubbock County, and two more in Midland. In one case, Lopez is accused of entering the victim's northwest Lubbock home and holding a knife to her throat. Police used DNA evidence from the scene to link Lopez to that crime, helping authorities obtain an arrest warrant.

Lubbock Police tell NewsChannel 11 Lopez could be connected to a handful of rapes in West Texas over the last decade. In addition, we are told police will continue to investigate those cases.

If you any information that could lead to the closure of those cases, call Crime Line at (806)741-1000.
