A report in the Journal of Pediatrics says this doesn't happen often, but it is a concern that in the last 20 years, 27 accidental baby deaths were blamed on the crib bumper pad. And another 25 were described as near fatal.
The journal says some infants died by suffocation, others were wedged between the pads and some other object and several were reportedly strangled by loose bumper ties.
The report suggests bumper pads that are too soft or loosely tied can be hazardous. And be sure to keep cribs clear of toys and other objects while the baby is sleeping.
