Former Texas Tech basketball star Tony Benford has his hat in the ring for the job as head basketball coach at the University of New Mexico. Benford played high school basketball at Hobbs, New Mexico, and after four years as a Red Raider, he because an assistant coach to Dave Bliss at New Mexico.
Now, he's an assistant coach at Arizona State and is hoping to hear from New Mexico about the head coaching job there. The Lobos coaching job is open. Fran Fraschilla retired Sunday after three years at the university.
New Mexico athletic director Rudy Davalos said he'd like a coach with head coaching experience at a NCAA Division I school. Benford hasn't been a head coach but points to the quick success that several other former assistants have had.
