A local credit union employee is now charged with stealing from a police benefit fund.

Police arrested 32-year-old Lorianne Sauceda Thursday afternoon. She's accused of stealing between $500 and $1,500 from WesTex Federal Credit Union.

Sauceda worked at the credit union on Avenue Q. Investigators say she would cash checks instead of depositing them, and those checks were for Lubbock Police Corporal Scott Childers.

Childers was seriously injured last month when he lost control of his motorcycle in New Mexico.

"Being a police officer, to me, is beside the point. The meat of the matter is there's this person who's seriously injured and they're stealing from him, and I think that's the height of pitifulness," Lt. Scott Hudgens said.

WesTex caught the missing money quickly through their accounting procedures, and turned that information over to police.

Sauceda bonded out of jail just before 3 p.m. Thursday.

Police tell us that Cpl. Childers is improving at University Medical Center.
